Automatic Chip Handling and Thickness Screening

Automated chip handling enables more consistent chip aging. With improved chip screening the woodchips entering the digester in chemical pulping have a more even size distribution and this helps reduce steam consumption both in the digester and evaporator. In addition to reducing energy consumption, combined automated chip handling and screening gives higher pulp and by-product yields and causes less chip damage. Estimates suggest that digester yield can be increased by around 5% to 10% (which is offset somewhat by raw material screened out as undersized) (Kramer et al., 2009. p.89)
