Improved Insulation of the Annealing Lehr

The annealing lehr loses energy through the walls. Selection of insulation materials with a low thermal mass will reduce the heat losses through the walls, and reduce start-up losses.
Similarly, using low-thermal mass materials for the rollers that transport the material through the lehr will help reduce energy consumption. In cases where belts are used for material transport, metal belts may be set up in such a way that they stay as much in the furnace (e.g., internal belt returns through the bottom of the furnace) as possible, thereby reducing energy losses (Worrell et al., 2008. p.72).
