International Fertilizer Association (IFA)

International Fertilizer Association (IFA) represents the global fertilizer industry and has about 540 members in 85 countries. Half of the membership is based in developing countries. IFA member companies represent all activities related to the production, trade, transport and distribution of every type of fertilizer, their raw materials and intermediates.

IFA has published a number of documents related to energy efficiency and CO2 emissions in the the sector. Some examples of these include the following: 

The fertilizer industry’s manufacturing processes and  environmental issues – Technical report part 1 (1998) is prepared by IFA, in collaboration with UNEP and UNIDO. This report  provides guidelines on how environmental objectives might be achieved in the production of fertilizers by means of integrated industrial and environmental policies and targets both policy-making bodies outside the fertilizer industry whose decisions affect the industry and the fertilizer industry – in particular in countries where the industry is still being established, or where action is needed to correct past unsatisfactory practices. The information provided enables them to benefit from the experience of countries with a well-established fertilizer industry, subject to disciplines developed over a long period of time.

Energy Efficiency and CO2 Emissions in Ammonia Production, 2008-2009 Summary Report (2009) is the outcome of a IFA study focusing on the potential to reduce energy consumption in the industry with the adoption of new technologies in the coming decades. To assess this potential, the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) periodically conducts an industry‐wide benchmarking survey which is used to estimate energy efficiency in the ammonia sector. This summary report summarizes the results of this survey. The results are valuable for IFA producers’ knowledge of plant performance; to assist operators in assessing plant efficiency relative to industry averages; and to help identify opportunities for continual improvement. The results are also valuable to policy makers, as they can serve as a basis for well‐adapted policy analysis and implementation.

Fertilizers, Climate Change and Enhancing Agricultural Productivity Sustainably (2009) is another IFA publication and discusses relations between fertilizer production, use and greenhouse gas emissions. It discusses policies to ensure the sustainability of fertilizer production and use in agriculture
