Most electric furnaces use electrodes in the batch to melt the raw materials into glass. A batch pot furnace is rebuilt in Sandvik Glassworks and Ramco in Sweden and is equipped with top-mounted electrodes to improve and maintain product quality, and obtain a higher share of salable glass. Test results showed a slight reduction in electricity consumption and an increased production of selable glass – compared to a similar furnace that was not rebuilt (Worrell et al., 2008. pp.69-70).
